PERBANDINGAN PENDEKATAN KOMUNIKATIF DAN “GRAMMAR TRANSLATION METHOD TERHADAP PENGUSAAN ‘CONTENT WORDS” BAHASA INGGRIS PEMULA DI DUA PERGURUAN TINGGI SWASTA PESERTA PENLOK METHODOLOGY PENELITIAN TAHUN 2003 DI MANADO

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to find out the comparison of Communicative Method to Grammar Translation Method in identifying content words of Beginning English student as two private universities attending research methodology 2003 in Manado. This population were 52 second semester Beginning English students of Universitas Klabat and 48 students of Universitas Nusantara. The methodology used was experimental method. The design was randomly selected subject which was characterized by pre-measurement. Pre-measurement was given to experimental group (X1) and control group (X2) of Universitas Klabat and Universitas Nusantara. After the experiment post-test was given to each group data was analyzed by using descriptive method. The instrument used was 70 items of self-constructed test with r. 96. Based on the findings the conclusions were drawn as follows:


Problem 1. Universitas Nusantara. The finding showed that noun t-observe was 3.5391, verb was 3.1580, adverb was 2.7597 were all bigger than t-critical 1.6759 at alfa .05 and the 46 degree of freedom. Therefore H1 was accepted. There was significant difference in the ability level of communicative method group compared to grammar translation method group. Whereas for adjective the t-observe was 0.5843 is smaller than the t-critical 1.6759*. therefore He was rejected. There was no significant difference in the ability level of communicative method group compared to the grammar translation method group.


Problem 2. Universitas Klabat. The noun t-observe was 3.6079, verb was 2.2160, adverb was 3.0411 were bigger than the t-critical 1.6759 at alfa .05 and the degree of freedom 46. Therefore, the H1 was accepted. Whereas for adjective the t-value 1.1548 was smaller than the t-critical 1.6759 with at .05 level of significant difference in the ability level of communicative method group compared to the grammar translation group.
